Symptoms

Backup with activated Volume Shadow Copy fails with the following error similar:

The backup has failed because 'VSS Writer' has failed during snapshot creation.

This error can be produced by different VSS writers, see some examples below:

 

When backing up a network shared folder you get 'The credentials for network share are incorrect' error, even though you are able to access this share in Windows File Explorer using the same credentials.

Symptoms

Backup activity fails with the following error:

Operating system error: The shadow copy provider had an error. Check the System and Application event logs for more information.

If there is not enough storage space to create the temporary snapshot file, the backup operation will fail with an error message similar to the following one:

Not enough storage is available to process this command
